The surprise "Deterrence of Aggression" operation launched by Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham and pro-Turkish factions on November 27, 2024 against Syrian government forces managed to take control of areas in central Aleppo and others in the Idlib countryside in the northwest of the country, in an attack that is the first of its kind in 5 years. The opposition announced during the past two days that it had taken control of the strategic city of Saraqib in addition to its control of the city of Maarat al-Numan in southern Idlib, which means that the entire Idlib province is now under the control of the opposition.

The statements of the regional and international parties involved in the Syrian crisis reflect an atmosphere of escalating disagreement between them against the backdrop of the field developments witnessed in Idlib, which are likely to escalate further in the coming period. While Ankara adopted a less severe discourse towards the "Deterrence of Aggression" operation, and simultaneously held the regime responsible for the tensions in Idlib, the foreign ministers of Moscow and Tehran confirmed on November 30, 2024 their support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, and revealed the provision of the necessary capabilities to confront terrorist organizations in Idlib.
