The need for housing is one of the most important requirements for living for members of society. Recent years have witnessed a wide and increasing demand for housing resulting from population growth and the rise in the standard of living of the population. This has created severe pressure on resources, including land, and the housing crisis has emerged. Today, Iraq faces this reality for many reasons that have resulted in several crises, including the housing crisis, as official statistics specializing in studying the housing reality have shown a deficit in housing units that has reached the limits of (3) million housing units, which requires official measures to be taken by the government to address this crisis. The housing reality in Iraq indicates a large deficit in housing units through some indicators indicating this, such as the unwillingness of a large percentage of the population to live in vertical housing units and the spread of slums in all areas of Iraq, in addition to the high population density in housing units. Therefore, knowing the housing need in Iraq is done by knowing the number of residents for the purpose of calculating the number of families and the number of housing units. According to the statistics of the National Development Plan of the Ministry of Planning and Development Cooperation for the period (2017-2021), the number of families in Iraq reached (5.9) million in 2018 and continued to increase to reach (7.2) million in 2021. The reason is due to the increase in the population at a high annual growth rate in addition to the multiplicity of families as a result of the increase in marriages and separation from the original families, as the rate of increase in the number of families exceeds the rate of increase in housing units, which creates a deficit in the annual increasing housing need, which rose from (1.6) million housing units in 2018 to (1.9 million housing units in 2021.
